Places of Worship Winners!

Ranelagh has long been a proud member of Religion Matters, a programme that works in partnership with the borough to advise on the teaching and learning of religious education. One of the more excitement elements of the programme is the Places of Worship Art Competition, where over 80 schools across Newham submit religiously-themed artwork, inspired by a visit to a place of worship. Every child in our school is provided the opportunity to visit a different place of worship each year, celebrating different faiths. From Early Years to Year 6, children at Ranelagh visit a church, a mosque, a synagogue, a gurdwara, a mandir, a Buddhist temple and the Salvation Army. Drawing inspiration from their visits, and back in the classroom, the children reflect on what they learn. Their learning and the activities therein then compose some of the pieces that are then chosen to be entered for competition. |
For example, this year Theo in Year 1 decided to draw and paint a picture of a church after his visit. Maria, in Year 2, enjoyed her visit to the Green Street Mosque and was particularly impressed with the large prayer mats inside. She decided to write about her visit and then create her own prayer mats, in a similar style, with her classmates. Elsewhere, children in Year 5 learnt about Sikhism and how Sikhs worship through their visit to a gurdwara, and back at school created digital word art showcasing the values important to Sikhs.
In the end Ranelagh won 4 prizes: Best runner up individual response KS1 (Maria), Best Class Response (Year 4), Best Individual Response (Theo, Yr 1) and Best ICT entry (Year 5). Well done and congratulations Ranelagh!
