  • No one feels blue at Ranelagh!

    Published 19/04/22

Celebrating and accepting all differences has never been so important than over the past few years. Ranelagh, as ever, accepts this and takes on this gauntlet with great gusto and pride!

Every year the school works tirelessly in promoting Autism awareness both within the school as well as within the local community. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a life -long condition that affects the way children communicate and behave.

Autism awareness is not something that is isolated to one week at Ranelagh Primary but it’s something that we promote each and every day. This can be seen in the classrooms, in outside play as well as in the lessons that teachers plan. One recent visitor commented on how they could see this being a ‘cornerstone in everything the school does.’

The children themselves are experts on this and displayed their substantial knowledge of Autism and how they can support children with this. "You should not be loud because some children might feel upset" said Saeed in Year 1.  Mary observed "Some people might feel confused when there are so many people around them so don't be rude if they don't want to play with you". Aaliyah commented ‘having different children in our school helps us to be tolerant to everyone.’

Equally, the children with Autism in the school have an important role to play and show everyone their individuality, humour and interests through their actions and behaviour.

Although we could not have our legendary cake sale to raise funds for this worthwhile cause, this did not dampen the children’s spirits as Thursday was the chance for children to dress up in all shades of blue - ranging from blue T shirts, socks and sweaters.

As one teacher reported, “Autism affects how a person thinks, feels and learns, and we believe it is crucial that teachers and children at the school know and understand as much as possible about this condition”.

Mrs Lawrenson said, “We are determined that everyone who is on the Autistic Spectrum should get the best start possible, and have the same chance to enjoy their time at school as everyone else. It is events like these and the continuing inclusive practice at the school that makes this possible.”

Finally, all of this could not be done without the ongoing support of our parents, carers and community. As one of the parents said ‘ I really wish other schools were like Ranelagh!’

  • Ranelagh's Easter Egg 'Eggstravaganza'

    Published 31/03/22

What an ‘eggsceptional’ end to the Spring term. The children were really 'eggsited' about the School Council's annual Easter Egg Hunt.

Children and adults alike enjoyed 'eggsploring' through the school grounds for eggs with special codes - some found it very 'eggsacting', but managed to find all 12 eggs. The ticket was put into a special draw and, as you can see from the picture, the winners won some very 'eggstravagant' prizes.

Happy Easter from everyone in Ranelagh's school Council!

EYFS loved trying on the police uniform, exploring the police car and van and they were also lucky enough to sound the police sirens all  by themselves.

  • Funny Is Power - Comic Relief at Ranelagh

    Published 18/03/22

Helping people live free from poverty, violence and discrimination is the theme for Red Nose Day this year. Ranelagh School Council organised the troops and asked all children and adults to dress in red - doing something funny for money. If School Council ask, then the school will do.

In the morning, instead of all the staff gathering for their weekly morning briefing, Mrs Lawrenson insisted they play ridiculous ball games.

Laughter could be heard echoing out of the hall as the bell chimed.

In our whole school celebration assembly, the school council took to the stage and told us about the great contribution Comic Relief makes to people in Great Britain and people in the world. They thanked everyone who dressed up and who donated money, especially in these financially difficult times. They finished by pulling silly faces at their audience.

The whole school reflected on those less fortunate. The School Council will count up the donations and send it off to Comic Relief. A huge thankyou form us all.

Please do enjoy the photos of the school showing Funny Is Power...

  • The Olympic Legacy

    Published 09/03/22

By the time children leave Ranelagh, they know the contribution people from their community  make to the wider society and that their stories are important for future generations. This is why Ranelagh is excited to be part of Newham's Heritage Month events - The Olympic Legacy. Children from Year 5, most of whom were born during the year of the London Olympics, ventured to Newham's archives to feast their eyes up on the artefacts of this time. They held the Olympic torches and posters from that time.

Over the next month, they will interview people who were directly involved in the contribution they made during the 2012 Olympic Games. Being involved with this wonderful celebration will ensure that the children of Ranelagh see themselves as Historians and legacy-makers of the future.

  • “Don’t be a bystander. Speak out when you see injustice and fight for a better world.”

    Published 27/01/22

“Don’t be a bystander. Speak out when you see injustice and fight for a better world.” This was the powerful message delivered to year 6 this week by Holocaust survivor Mala Tribich during our live webinar with her and author Tom Palmer as part of an event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day. The children were enthralled as Mala recalled her experience of the German invasion of Poland and her eventual transportation by a cattle truck to the Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp, where she lived in appalling conditions until the camp was liberated by the British army.

Through reading Hitler’s Canary by Sandi Toksvig in class, the children were able to draw comparisons between the lives of the fictional characters in the book and the treatment of Mala Tribich. One year 6 child remarked, “It is important that we learn about this event so that the people that lost their lives are remembered and to make sure that nothing like it ever happens again in the world.”
