Throughout Mental Health Week (6th-9th February), Staff and children pulled out all the stops to make sure everyone at Ranelagh felt mentally supported.
From Assemblies to Voice boxes, children were given every opportunity to talk about good mental health. We created safe spaces in the playground for children to talk about things that made them sad or uncomfortable by having workshops run by the Wellness in Newham Schools (WINS) Lead.
We learnt that it was okay to feel worried, but how we deal with this emotion is much more important.By talking openly about our mental health, we were able to challenge the stereotypes and reduce the stigma around poor mental health.
We know that Ranelagh truly is a school that promotes kindness, empathy and inclusion. What a great place to work and learn!
As part of their RE studies about Islam, Year 5 visited Anjuman-e-Islamia Mosque in Newham to explore the place of worship and find how people of a Muslim faith use this building to practise their faith. The children and staff were fascinated to see the mosque's beautiful architecture with islamic patterns and calligraphy artwork. Due to Covid 19, the children did not visit the mosque as planned in their RE Curriculum.
Alishba stated “ We watched the Imam pray and listened to a short talk about the key areas in the mosque, It was brilliant!”
Martin stated “ The mosque was beautifully designed and it was very peaceful inside, I will never forget this trip”.
At Ranelagh, we believe that trips to Places of Worship are important in developing children's knowledge, tolerance and respect for others from different faiths, as we prepare our children to live and work in the multicultural world in which we live.
There are times when we all feel the strain, when things feel overwhelming. As parents/carers and teachers, there are many ways in which we can help ourselves and our children to stay emotionally healthy.
At Ranelagh Primary , we will once again be celebrating Children's Mental Health Week from 5th-11th February 2024. This year's theme will be ‘ My voice Matters.’
During the week, we will be encouraging the children (and adults!) to consider how they have grown emotionally and what they can do to help each other to grow and adapt- despite the challenges and setbacks we may face. We will talk about how we can try new things which may often be out of our comfort zone , making us more resilient and to help us make the right choices.
On Friday 9th February 2024, we will celebrate mental healthiness by dressing up in a fun way which allows us to express ourselves!
So let's ditch that uniform and dig out those dotty dresses, Jazzy Jumpers and Wacky Wigs and use this opportunity to express the wonderful you.
You matter and your voice matters!

Last Friday, some of the year 6 children took part in a special event at East Ham Town Hall - the Holocaust Memorial Day. The event commemorated the 6 million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution of other groups, and in more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
Children have learnt that each year across the UK, thousands of people come together to learn more about the past and take action to create a safer future.
'I have really enjoyed the trip, so memorable and touching,' said Joshua.
On Wednesday, Year 6 walked to their nearest theatre, Stratford East, to see ,'A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings'. Inspired by Gabriel García Márquez’s story, this is a startling world of ruined beauty and magical reality where everyone dreams of their five minutes of fame and riches, and the extraordinary takes flight. Acted by miniature puppets, Aranaya of 6T5 said the story was about an angel who fell to earth and became an attraction for many people. 'It was an interesting play and the ending made you think.'
Going to a theatre to see a live performance is an expensive venture for many. This is why Ranelagh jumped at the chance for their Year 6 to experience it.
' I'm lucky enough to have been to the theatre before, but for others who haven't, this would inspire them to see more.'
Children at Ranelagh were given beautiful Christmas presents to enjoy in their school holidays.
The toys were donated by ELBA - East London business association in Canary Wharf. See the exciting moments!
Children at Ranelagh had a special Christmas assembly with Vicar Dan Scott where they listened to the Christmas story and looked at artefacts linked to Christianity.
Vicar Dan retold the special story and asked children to reflect at this special time of year.
Eddy in Year 6 said, 'We are lucky we have a loving family and friends. Not everyone is as lucky as us'.
We are indeed privileged to have some truly caring and wonderful children in our school. As a result of the kind generosity of our community, we were able to raise a whopping £150 donation.
On a cold and blustery day, a cup of steaming hot chocolate was just what was needed. The children enjoyed the drinks made by the school council in aid of a good cause.
All the money raised will go towards the London Air Ambulance service. Watch this space to see how much we raised!
As the famous quote by Dr Seuss states,
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
Reading is the backbone of Ranelagh. In these times of financial insecurity, books are an added expense to the decisions you make. As a school, we make sure that all your children take home a book that they can read to you, or you can read to them.
This year, thanks to the hard work of Mrs Sheikh, we were successful in our application to get free books for all the children of Ranelagh through the Children's Book Project , a charity which asks for us to recycle books. As a result, all children visited our new Pop-Up Book Hut and its treasure trove of books, and choose a book to keep for themselves. They will receive a free book each term, and we will keep you updated. Don't forget our Ranelagh Recommends
Remember that reading to your child is a brilliant way of raising their love of books, but also their achievement in life. You can take your child to your local library where they can find books that they will love .Newham Local Libraries.
When the children of Ranelagh returned to school in September , they were amazed to see the Red Pitch had been transformed into a magnificent baseball Pitch. This is the legacy left by the MLB : London Series. On Friday 22nd September , dignitaries from all over London ,from the borough of Newham, from the Trust and from the Ranelagh community who all gathered to launch Ranelagh Rockets - The Baseball Legacy.
Hosted by Genesis and David from Year 6 , who were lucky to be mascots in the London series at London Stadium in June, there were speeches from the CEO of the Tapscott Learning Trust , Paul Harris and from the Executive CEO of MLB Europe, Ben Larkin.

Mr Harris thanked everyone for their donations. He said ‘ I’m sure that working in partnership with YST and BSUK is something which will grow within our schools in the trust and for the community . A lasting legacy which will hopefully produce some of the stars of the future. ‘
The ceremony opened with a ukulele rendition of take me out to the Ball game by Year 6 children.

Jon Rye of Baseball Softball UK was presented with a Ranelagh Rockets cap and hoodie as a thank you for all he has done for the school. Without him baseball never would have come to Ranelagh. To start off the first official baseball game here at Ranelagh, Jon was asked to throw the ceremonial first pitch. Followed by our very own Year 5 Leony, yelling play ball!

This started off a great game, where everyone from students, to head teachers, to PTA members all came together to play the amazing game of baseball.
